STATEMENTS, THOUGHTS, COMMANDS, REQUESTS
Exercise 1 Tense changes. A customer came to a Mercedes showroom in a very old Fiat. There was an old lady in the back of the car. Rewrite the following sentences in reported speech. (This is based on a true story).
Example:
1. The customer said, «I'm thinking about buying a new car».
The customer said that he was thinking about buying a new car.
2. The salesman said, «The new S5OO is very good value».
3. The customer said, «I bought a Mercedes in 1989 and I liked it a lot».
4. The salesman said, «You can take it for a test drive».
5. The customer said, «I don't have any identification...but the woman in the car is my grandmother».
6. The salesman said, «That will be fine».
7. Two hours later, the salesman said, «Your grandson is taking a long time».
8. Òhe woman said, «He isn't my grandson...He offered to drive me to the shops. I have never seen him before».
Exercise 2. Tense changes. Read the report about what a candidate said at an interview. Change the words in italics into direct speech.
She said, «I am very interested in working for Harper & Grant Ltd.».
Miss Harvey said mat she was very interested in working for Harper & Grant Ltd and she explained that she joined a training scheme run by Palmer A Vincent Agency and stayed with them for a year . Then she added that she had been working for her present advertising agency for the past three years . When Mr. Martin asked Miss Harvey about her responsibilities at the moment she said that she handled quite a number of accounts, planed the advertising campaign, coordinated the work of the visualiser, discussed the layout with the clients, checked proofs and even had to do the work of the specialists . When Mr. Martin asked her about the reasons for leaving, she said that she liked what she did, but she wanted more responsibility as she thought industry was so go-ahead and modern. She seemed well-qualified for the port and Mr. Martin could only do his best to convince the Managing Director. As far as her terms of notice are concerned, she made it clear that she could leave her job immediately . Finally, Hector Grant decided to offer her the job, and she said that she would consider his offer, and would let him have her decision soon .
Exercise 3 Write the correct form of say or tell in the following sentences. Be careful to observe sequence of tenses.
1. The judge instructed the witness to the whole truth about the sources of her income.
2. Smith he would provide a source of finance for investment.
3. He saw his boss in the office and that he had wanted to offer him to buy into firm.
4. The little boy a lie about not eating the cookies before lunch.
5. Never a secret to a person who spreads gossip.
6. Miss Briggs she had a degree in Economics and an MBA.
7. He his employer that he couldn't leave his job for another month.
8. She she would send him the report.
9. What time did they that the seminar had begun?
10. The customer bought both models because h å couldn't the difference.
Exercise 4 Change the following direct commands, requests, invitations etc. Using tell, order, ask, beg, advise, remind, warn, reproach etc., remember that the person addressed is often not mentioned in a direct command, but must be mentioned in an indirect command.
1. «Lend me some money», I said to my friend.
I asked my friend to tend me some money.
2. «Don't believe everything you hear», she warned me.
3. «Read it before you sign it», me manager said to the customer.
4. «Don't worry about anything, Mrs. Whiles», said the solicitor «Leave it all to me».
5. «See if you can find any receipt», the shop assistant said.
6. «Read it yourself if you don't believe what I say», he told me.
7. «Answer this complaint!» he ordered. «And remember to keep a copy».
8. «Invest into the company», I advised my friend.
9. «Don't argue with me!» the senior officer said to his subordinate.
10. «Pay at the cash desk», the bank teller said to the customer.
